UI Design Intern

We’re the UK market leader in travel ancillaries; once you have booked a flight and accommodation, we take care of the rest.  That includes airport hotels, insurance, airport parking, lounges, foreign currency, car hire, resort transfers and attractions.  Almost all of our business is conducted online, either direct through our own website and apps or through our network of partners that include the major travel retailers, airlines and tour operators.

Our team is based near the beach in Hythe, Kent, less than an hour from London and we also have engineers in Sofia (Bulgaria).  In total we have more than 130 people working on our product development including engineers, product managers, testers, and designers.  The team form into pods, each pod having a mission and part of the customer journey that they focus on, with clear KPIs that they work on improving.  

How you can make a difference

We know that the very best designers all started out somewhere and learned their craft by doing. The classroom gets you so far; real life experience will hone your technical, design and people skills. This may well be your first commercial role where you are proving your potential and putting your talent to work.  

You love translating concepts into a visual reality, designing to make it easy for customers to use our websites and apps. You’ll partner with our product leads and engineers, working across a variety of projects to create mock-ups of interactions, testing a wide variety of options to find the highest performing design. It could be at any point of our customer journey and on one of our many applications, products or brands.

With our product leads you will developing plans to improve the customer experience and create a “wow” effect. You’ll need to understand our customers; their needs, wants, behaviours and attitudes. You will need to understand relevant data to inform design direction as well as anticipating how and why our customers think and act.

Your aim will be to deliver quickly, working in short cycles to build measure and learn. Changes are delivered incrementally and often. You will be flexible in your approach, being willing to change and adapt designs quickly based on new information. Your cognitive biases are left at the door, and you’re not afraid to fail.

You will have a deep intuitive sense of what good likes like for consumer internet products. You’ll never be satisfied with a pixel out of position but you will first prioritise learning and only insist on perfection once a change has proven it’s value.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Collaborating with product leads and engineers to define and implement innovative solutions for the product direction, visuals and experience
  • Executing all visual design stages from concept to build
  • Form original ideas that bring simplicity and user friendliness to the customer experience
  • Creating wireframes, storyboards, user flows and process flows to effectively communicate interaction and design ideas
  • Present and defend designs to peers and stakeholders

Pre-departure checklist

  • You will have an eye for clean and artful design, possess superior UI skills and be able to translate high-level requirements into interaction flows and artifacts, and transform them into beautiful, intuitive, and functional user interfaces.

We are looking for a Growth Hacker to join the team – an impatient individual who won’t sit back and wait for things to happen; they make it happen. A Growth Hacker will run initiatives that could touch almost every area of the organisation, from digital acquisition to website optimisation, customer experience and commercial agreements. A Growth Hacker is constantly on the lookout for any ‘hack’ that can drive growth, in any aspect of the product funnel. Working closely with the Head of Growth (and most teams in the business) they will be constantly testing, iterating, hustling, bustling, learning and finding numerous ways to drive more customers to Holiday Extras, whilst generating more value from existing customers.

Email Developer

Holiday Extras are on the lookout for an Email Developer to join our email marketing team! The Email team’s job is to communicate with every one of our over 5 million signed up customers in a relevant, entertaining and timely way. When people interact with our emails it makes us a happy team; when people click that dreaded unsubscribe link it make us sad: so it’s important that we send the right messages at the right time.

We’re an unusual mix of techy and creative and this is what enables us to code responsive emails, write SQL, create clever dynamic marketing campaigns, and understand our databases as well as designing email templates and coming up with new strategies to help boost our performance.

We use the latest software to create engaging experiences our customers expect across multiple devices and lifecycles and always strive to innovate in order to deliver the best experience. A day in the life of a Sales Specialist…

  • Your shift is due to start, but you come in a bit early for a cup of tea and a catch-up with your team. You read through all your new emails to make sure you have all you need to start the shift.
  • You log on and are ready to go. Your first call is from a lady looking to book a family trip to a UK theme park.
  • You love speaking to our customers and find it easy to build rapport. Your genuine, engaging personality shines through on every call and helps create a lasting impression that keeps our customers coming back time and time again.
  • As you finish a call, your Team Coach asks to see you – you have received a Mystery Shop with great results. Together you listen to the call and go through any areas of development that have been highlighted, to make sure next time is even better!
  • Your day is flying by and it’s time for lunch. You could use the brand new kitchen if you fancy a hot meal, but as your lunch today is just a sandwich you decide to eat at your desk and catch up with your friends on Facebook, or maybe do some online shopping. (Yes! this is allowed in your own time.)
  • After lunch you see that the daily stats have been updated and you are doing well. Your conversion is up and you have made real progress adding extras to the bookings. You’re not quite getting a bonus, but you still have most of the month to go and you can see where you need to pick up.
  • Later in the afternoon it’s time to have your coaching session, your coach has been listening into your calls today and together you discuss these. This is your chance to see what you do well and where your development areas lie. You work together to design a personal action plan for the month.
  • Back at your desk you have a busy half hour with non-stop calls. Each one is different and you easily switch between talking about our different products. You remain focussed and calm delivering an excellent customer experience to each call as if they were the first of the day.
  • You speak with a customer who is rather upset about something that hasn’t gone too well for them, but you thrive in challenging situations and will be able to confidently provide a solution. Because you are so good at what you do, the customer leaves feeling valued and more likely to return to us in the future.
  • The Shortbreaks facebook page throws up a notification. The latest photos of the most recent fun event have been posted by our people team. You and the team take a minute between calls to look at the photos and add comments, especially to the most embarrassing ones!
  • Just as you are about to log off at the end of the day, a call comes through at the last minute. Although you were looking forward to going, you take the call and give the customer 100%, as always. It takes you a minute to complete the after call work, and then you are free to go.
  • Your day is over and it’s time to go. You make sure you have handed over any callbacks for later to a colleague, log off, tidy your desk and head home.

As Product Manager, first and foremost you will understand our customers; their needs, wants, behaviours and attitudes. You will constantly gather information from as many sources as you can, both structured and unstructured, qualitative and quantitative to support your decision making and strategy. You know your data and you also understand how and why our customers think and act.

In conjunction with the Associate Director of Product and in coordination with other Product Managers in the group, you will translate the company strategy into product initiatives that will help us achieve our objectives.  

You will have responsibility for a core part of our customer experience and product offering, developing plans to improve the experience to create a “wow” effect. Working closely with UI designers, you will decide on what improvements or changes to launch, test or retire. You will form hypotheses on what success will look like and ensure you have the measurements in place to know the impact of tests.

Your aim will be to deliver value quickly, both to our customers and to the company, working in short iterative cycles to build measure and learn. Changes are delivered incrementally and often, always being able to explain the “why” behind the test and being on top of the results.

You will need to be ruthless in prioritising tests that could deliver real value, staying true to the company strategy. You will be flexible in your approach, being willing to change and adapt plans quickly based on new information. Your cognitive biases are left at the door, and you’re not afraid to fail.

Travel Consultants – Full & Part Time – Fixed Term Opportunities

The Contact Centre is made up of teams that manage inbound calls, emails and live chat. Some of our consultants work from home and we sell a range of products, including: airport parking, hotels, lounge passes, insurance, rail travel and a number of essential extras.

We are currently looking for team members to join us on a fixed term contract until the end of September/October 2017 to help us during our busy summer period.

The Role

You will be the voice of Holiday Extras; From making a sale to helping a customer book and amend their holiday add ons, you will be dealing with a variety of inbound calls everyday.

We don’t believe in ‘pushy’ sales or offering products to our customers that aren’t suitable. You will take a genuine interest in where the customer is going on their trip to get them in the holiday mindset & create a memorable customer experience. Through building meaningful connections with our customers, you can establish the customer’s needs, tailoring the service you provide and identify additional sales opportunities.

As someone who gets a buzz from closing a sale whilst delivering exceptional service, you love working towards targets and enjoy the healthy competition within your team.

You will be working in one of our 3 teams with around 20 other people and will report into one of our experienced Team Managers.

You will have complete ownership of your own performance and will receive regular development from your manager to continuously improve your performance so you can earn those extra bonuses!

Hours

We’re looking for super flexible full and part time people who are able to work across our opening hours. In order to truly delight our customers you may be asked to “flex up” your hours and assist with higher call volumes.

Full-Time – “Core Flex”: 30 Hours – “Full Flex”: 37.5 Hours – you will need to be fully flexible across our opening hours of Monday – Friday 8.00am until 11pm and Saturday – Sunday 8.30am until 9pm.

Part-Time – “Core Flex”: 16 Hours – “Full Flex”: 20 Hours – you will need to be available 3 evenings per week Monday to Friday until 11pm and 1 day at the weekend between 8am to 8pm.

You will be given notice if you are required to work your “full flex” but can be guaranteed your “Core Flex” hours each week!

The Role

We are looking for an innovative Front End Developer to work in our growing web team who will be responsible for delivering robust and performant web solutions across our platform. You will have the freedom to deliver the best solution for the challenges the business puts in front of you and will be given the resources and time you need to get the job done.

You will have significant, proven capability in front end development with an in-depth knowledge of the basics (HTML, CSS and JS) and also experience using React and pre processors such as PostCSS and LESS. You must also have experience in building for all devices as our responsive projects are essential for the development of our websites.

Some experience in Node.js and client side frameworks such as Angular or Backbone would be advantageous and you will be expected to keep up with ever changing technology and where possible, be ahead of the game.

Our partners are a vital part of our business, here at Holiday Extras we work with over 12,000 partners from across the travel industry. Ensuring we continue to grow this part of the business is vital to our continued success. We make 350,000 travel insurance sales a year at Holiday Extras with our travel trade partners making up a large percentage of these. We believe there is still more opportunity in and outside of the travel trade to secure new exciting partnerships.

We want our Business Development Manager to use their long list of travel trade contacts to start conversations about insurance requirements and open the door to new opportunities. You will be part of our growing Insurance team and play a part in their mission to build awesome relationships with our partners, looking for every opportunity to grow bookings and profit.

You’ll have a proven track record of delivering new business within the Leisure and Business Travel industry using your commercial know how and keen eye for data to spot new opportunities for growth. You don’t necessarily need to have experience working within the travel insurance sector, but you should have several years experience as a Business Development Manager within the travel trade and experience driving sales.

You will be responsible for the delivery of the overall new business budget, with your performance being measured against the gross profit you generate.This is a market that we have only scratched the surface of, so the potential for a strong Business Development professional is huge! Online Partnerships Development Manager – Fixed Term

We are looking for a tech savvy person with a background in online travel to join our Partnerships team for a fixed term of 12 months. We want someone who believes in delivering exceptional service, who can easily spot growth opportunities and build awesome relationships with a flexible and fun approach to account management. You’ll be dealing with online travel brands such as, Travelsupermarket, On the Beach, Saga and the AA on a daily basis. Carrying out day to day account management and identifying key areas of growth.

We’re looking for a data driven account manager with a passion for building sales and relationships. You’ll be able to build strong, long lasting relationships, both internally and externally.

You will be responsible for the delivery of the overall budget of your accounts, with your performance being measured against key KPI’s.

Skills and experience:

  • Proven track record in account management within travel
  • Proven track record of managing white label products and API integrations
  • Highly skilled in driving sales

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Excellent relationship builder
  • Excellent standards of numeracy and literacy
  • Experience of working in the travel and tourism industry

Senior Software Engineer

Up to £55,000 DOE + profit share + benefits

Holiday Extras are looking for experienced software engineers to come and use cutting edge technology to helps us revolutionise how customers (7 million and growing) travel better.

We’re in the process of moving to an API first micro services architecture and your skills and experience will be key in helping us achieve that, alongside helping us continue to deliver features that delight our customers and partners. We’ve got a lot of great work to do and believe in using tried and tested tools that enable us to push the boundaries of what is possible, fast. You can expect to be working daily building APIs with Javascript and Node.js®, using continuous delivery tooling and, if you’re feeling ambitious jumping into our front end and working with React.js and Redux.js. We build many of our tools in-house but also love open source so as well as taking much from the community you’ll find a lot of our codebase openly available on GitHub.

  • You’re a “been there and done it” software engineer looking to make an positive impact on millions of people.
  • Experience of shipping software using technologies such as Javascript/Node.js®. Ideally, you also have experience in other languages which shows you curiosity to experiment and learn.
  • You have previously designed API’s and shipped HTTP and Pub/Sub Services.
  • A desire to understand the business and where it’s heading.
  • A track record of being solutions focussed and an excellent problem solver, not afraid to make decisions and act quickly.
  • Always determined to acquire new skills and learn.
  • You understand the value of open source as demonstrated in your Github profile.
  • Demonstrable interest and experience in microservices architecture and highly scalable distributed web platforms.
  • A pragmatic approach to software delivery, understanding the pros (and cons) of shipping early and often.
