1) Why did you decide to join HX?

My dad worked here at the time and he wanted me to get off my *rse and do something, so he forced me to come into Holiday Extras and pack some boxes. That was 13 years ago!

From packing boxes for two weeks, I started working in the contact centre as a, then, reservations clerk; I then became part of the first team-leader group. From there I went into the commercial team and became a commercial executive, then a contracts manager and then head of commercial for hotels. Now, I am the associate merchandising director.

2) What does a typical day look like for you?

These days, it’s about catching up with my teams and making sure that they have their top priorities in order. I make sure that I attend some stand-up meetings to know that my key projects are moving in the right direction. I field some questions from team members and every now and then try to fit some work in too :)

At the most basic level, my job is to try to make stuff look and sound good to enable us to make as much money out of each booking as we possibly can.

3) What’s the coolest thing you have done/delivered/worked on/experienced at HX?

Wow. There are loads of cool things. It’s pretty amazing thinking back to where we were when we first started the web team to where we are now. Seeing the growth of the internet whilst enabling a technical environment has been awesome. I am constantly amazed by what we deliver – the range of products that we put in front of the customer – and this just keeps on getting bigger and better.

1) Why did you decide to join HX?

When I was a studying Multimedia Technology and Design at the University of Kent, Holiday Extras came down to the industrial placement talks to tell us about working there. I wanted to work in a role in web development (preferably front-end) as I love developing and have been doing so as a hobby from age 13. Holiday Extras interested me because the role was purely web based, with no use of flash. I came down for an interview and I got the role for my year in industry. I enjoyed it so much that, when I finished my degree and had an offer of a permanent placement, I didn’t consider any other businesses to work for. I was straight back at work two days after my final exam!

2) What does a typical day look like for you?

First and foremost is coffee; strong coffee. Then it’s straight into stand-up meetings with the project teams that I am working with at the time (we use Agile development, woop!). After catching up on the plan for the day, I then boot up my development environment and get cracking. Work could range from tracking down nasty bugs (one of my favourites, is that wrong?), to creating whole new systems using some of the new tech that’s becoming available to us on the web these days.
I’ve been really enjoying mentoring our new interns too. You learn so much after coming out of uni; it’s great watching them get excited by the web as a medium and what they can do with code.

During my lunch break, I’ll go for a skate, work on some personal projects, or if it’s been snowing, then we break out the sledges on the hills in the countryside around the office grounds. That’s really cool to be able to do!

3) What’s the coolest thing you have done/delivered/worked on/experienced at HX?

The new “responsively-designed” website that I have just produced for our pages using the latest and greatest web technologies available is really, really cool. This new system is now completely accessible and user friendly on everything from desktops to smartphones to iPads and Kindles – you can even book your parking and hotels on your Xbox or PS3. It’s really exciting for us to be able to apply the latest technology in a large commercial environment. We’re definitely ahead of the game there.

4) What do you enjoy the most about working at HX?

The really excellent team of people I get to work with every day. Actually, everyone in this business is really excellent. There is a professional, but relaxed atmosphere where fun gets brought into the workplace. I really love writing code and the web as its own medium. I’m really happy that I get paid for doing what I love! I shouldn’t have admitted that should? :)

1) Why did you decide to join HX?

For me, I had a couple of different opportunities to choose from, but what really sold it was when I came in for the interview. The atmosphere and the energy in the building was great. There is a really good vibe here and that’s what sold it for me.

2) What does a typical day look like for you?

Coming in and checking the data that has been processed from the previous day. From that, I update the various spreadsheets and check their validity with the new data. By mid morning, I start looking at my priorities for the afternoon and juggling those with the business needs and also what other priorities come in from my manager. I also start looking at what needs to be done the following day, but like anywhere, these can change again the next day.

3) What’s the coolest thing you have done/delivered/worked on/experienced at HX?

Something that I’ve started doing, which I haven’t been able to dedicate a lot of time to at the moment, is the data mining with the add-on products.  We look at the different add-ons that we offer, with the various price points and choice, and see how that influences what people buy.

4) What do you enjoy the most about working at HX?

I would say the atmosphere. Everyone is friendly and there is a lot of energy in the building. For me, I also really like the weekly shout outs (one of the top team keeps us up to date on how we’re doing and what’s going on). Other companies I’ve been at haven’t always been keen to share this sort of information. Everyone gets to hear the high-level data, so we all know that we’re on the same page.

1) Why did you decide to join HX?

I saw a thread on Facebook where someone mentioned that the local Starbucks had closed down and questioned: ‘where are the people at Holiday Extras going to get their coffees now?’ I happened to be looking for a job at the time and thought: ‘oh yeah, Holiday Extras is another option’. I checked out the website and it seemed like a pretty-okay place to work, so I applied for the quality assurance tester job. In the end, the reason that I took the role was because of my interview process. When I came in I could immediately feel it was a great place to work, and the people that interviewed me were really nice.

2) What does a typical day look like for you?

First thing, I catch up on a few emails, have stand-up meetings for projects I am involved in to feed back to the team what I did yesterday and what I’m working on today. I then get on with project work, which can include: creating test plans, carrying out testing on different devices and sending feedback to the developers. In the afternoon I usually stop for a game of pool, and throughout the day I also work on any ad hoc stuff that comes in.

I am also a ‘people ambassador’, so I get to be involved in making suggestions to the People team and to the business about what would have a continued positive impact on our people. It’s good to get involved and I love that my opinion genuinely counts!

3) What’s the coolest thing you have done/delivered/worked on/experienced at HX?

We had a brainstorming session for one of our new sites at the CEO’s beach-house. It was awesome. Nothing was off the page, we could bring up anything that we wanted. We even went for a paddle in the sea in the afternoon.

1) Why did you decide to join HX?

Initially, I was working here part time whilst I was at uni. Someone had recommended the job. That was nearly 10 years ago. I enjoyed working in the contact centre. Other jobs in other companies seemed really boring. Holiday Extras was a different company to any I had ever worked at before.

I then finished uni and wondered what I was going to do. I wanted to stay at Holiday Extras, as I loved it. It was a great working environment. I heard that Matt Pack (now CEO) was coming in to kick off a web team. Fortunately, he took me on. It was up to me to prove how much I could do. It’s amazing to see how much the web team has grown since then. It was a small handful of people and now there are around 100.

2) What does a typical day look like for you?

I love my work; I spend my evenings thinking about it. Every day is completely different.

Thanks to being able to work flexibly, I get in early now, so I have about an hour before the building starts buzzing where I can look at our SEO positions, our stats and I analyse our results. From this, I can then plan the strategy for the team for that day. I create a monster of a list and I love ticking bits off as I go. I always aim to cross off two thirds of my list each day.

In my role, I spend a fair chunk of time co-ordinating the team and making sure that everyone is focused on the right things that will make a difference to our SEO standings. I guide the team to get the traffic, but they are the experts, so I let them get on with their jobs, making sure that we are focused on both the customer and the tech side of things – they are both as important as each other.

3) What’s the coolest thing you have done/delivered/worked on/experienced at HX?

Going to a £1-million Google party in San Jose was definitely a highlight too!!!

4) What do you enjoy most about working at HX?

I love that I have the freedom to keep pushing strategy forward and that I am left to it. I get given new opportunities all the time and I’ve gained lots of respect throughout the business over the time that I have been here.

I also love all the fun events, especially the tournaments. I just love to win, we have so much fun. When you compare this to other businesses, I know it’s completely different. So much so that I’d put a value on it of around £20k on top of my salary! I really, really, really value the environment that we have, as I know that we are all valued here too. I have never been in the position where I would even consider leaving. I am completely dedicated to this business, the brand and how Matt (CEO) and Gerry (the then Chairman) have run this business and kept the momentum going.

1) Why did you decide to join HX?

I joined when I was doing my A-levels as it was well paid in the contact centre for a part-time student and the hours suited my needs perfectly. I did really well and got loads of bonuses, so I was earning much more than any of my friends.

I then moved over to the commercial team and developed my career. I started at the bottom and now, in only five years, I am the product manager for Gatwick and Heathrow.

2) What does a typical day look like for you?

Basically, I manage the relationship with the hotels for Gatwick and Heathrow, so I am really busy as these are our biggest areas and make up around 60% of our business. I give full support to the commercial revenue managers. I am lucky enough to manage the relationships and I get to meet everyone in the hotel businesses. My daily tasks see me doing things from contracting to system set up – a wide variety of things to do on any typical day depending on business priorities.

3) What’s the coolest thing you have done/delivered/worked on/experienced at HX?

I love negotiating rates and relationship-building. In addition, being integral to developing add-ons has given me a great sense of achievement. When I first started, we didn’t have any extras to sell and now we have loads. It’s great to see how far we have come in only a few years.

Plus, I get a company car, have an Apple iBook and an iPhone 4S to boot – the tech is really cool.

4) What do you enjoy the most about working at HX?

The environment and people! I feel continually inspired. Everyone knows the direction of the business and all the teams are really close with each other, so we use our resources really well to all work together.

1) Why did you decide to join HX?

The CEO at the time (Steve Lawrence) bent my arm. HX was branching out – going online. Steve knew me and knew that I knew the web, so he got me to join.

2) What does a typical day look like for you?

First thing I do is check the numbers. I then normally have a chat to the people that I need to first thing – usually the other directors. I then do a walk around and say ‘hi’ to the wider team. That is really important for me to do, I love it. Normally the rest of the day is followed by meetings and then I hit the emails for a while. I check out our site and look at the things we are releasing.

3) What’s the coolest thing you have done/delivered/worked on/experienced at HX?

That’s a hard question! But really, there is nothing like the feeling of something going live for the customer. When the first website went live, when we had the first online booking, the first theatre booking, the first new holiday app booking – the first of everything new that we do is an exhilarating feeling. It feels great because you know the customer wants something that you have created.

1) Why did you decide to join HX?

I decided to join as quite a few friends of mine worked here already and I had heard that it was a fun place to work and that there were loads of opportunities to progress if you worked hard.

I joined in the contact centre first. I worked within a few different departments in there. I then moved to the ShortBreaks team as a product administrator and was quickly promoted to product executive. I spent two years developing my skills in account management before I joined the partnerships team in the core business as a partnerships development manager. I now manage some of our major trade partnerships including EasyJet, The AA, Saga, Travel Supermarket, Flybe, Travelodge and Directline Holidays. I am also grateful to have been given a mentoring position to help pass on my account management skills to other colleagues.

2) What does a typical day look like for you?

All my days are very busy. I’ll start the day by looking at our core data for the previous day, which then helps me to prioritise my actions according to where I am going to add most value for that day.

These day-to-day actions include:
- Preparing & hosting conference calls with my partners
- Preparing proposals for new products or technical enhancements to sell to our partners
- Reviewing data
- Attending internal meetings

I have a catch up with my boss once a week to review my partnerships performance and any current updates that will affect business. I am also on the road all over the UK for around two to three days each week. I get to go to great events and reward presentations and fly off to Scotland, Germany and drive around the country. It’s pretty hectic, but it’s great!

3) What’s the coolest thing you have done/delivered/worked on/experienced at HX?

I love the relationships that I have developed with partners that I work with at other companies. I have a much better appreciation of how businesses work together. Seeing regular growth from my partners is the goal and is a great personal and professional achievement if I hit and exceed this.

4) What do you enjoy the most about working at HX?

The people! And the fact that it’s a fun and relaxed atmosphere. The ability to work flexibly makes a great difference.

1) Why did you decide to join HX?

In a previous life, I was working in recruitment. I wanted to broaden my experience to general HR and I wanted to do my Masters as well, but the company that I was working with at the time weren’t in a position to sponsor me and I couldn’t afford to do it myself.

One of my recruitment contacts mentioned that Holiday Extras was looking for someone to work in their HR team. I had a look on the website and it looked pretty cool, but it was a long way from where I lived. I decided to go in for the interview anyway, but didn’t really think that I would take the job due to distance – compounded by the fact that I didn’t have a car and it wasn’t a commutable route by public transport for me either. When I think about it now – I don’t know why I came for the interview really.

But, to be honest, I was sold as soon as I walked through the doors. It seemed like an amazing company – I felt buzzy and excited from the moment that I walked in. I was offered the role and even moved house to be closer to work. I’m very glad I did. It’s very cool living down here and I love my job! I know that makes me very lucky – not everyone in the world can say that they get paid doing what they love.

2) What does a typical day look like for you?

Can’t say there is such a thing as a typical day – that is one of the reasons why I love my job really, it’s full of variety. The purpose of my role is to make Holiday Extras a truly-amazing place to work, so if it fits into that category, then I make sure it gets done. I get to work strategically on big projects around Total Reward, Employer Brand and Engagement mainly. I love doing work that I know can make a real impact on people’s lives. Given that everyone spends such a huge proportion of their lives at work, it makes a real difference to everyone if they love it, and they do! So, I’m a happy bunny. Saying that, there are loads of things that we can keep on doing to make it even better!

3) What’s the coolest thing you have done/delivered/worked on/experienced at HX?

I’ve really enjoyed developing the way we do people-related things at Holiday Extras. We work hard on making sure that we are pro-active and add value rather than being a reactive team. I’ve loved working on the new careers website and I know it will have a real impact. It’s awesome working with local universities and seeing how the changes that we deliver as a team make for really-positive change, in the business generally and for the people within it. In addition, it’s helping university graduates gain experience during a time when it can be really hard out there finding a job.

4) What do you enjoy the most about working at HX?

The relationships that I’ve built within my team and with other teams. The people generally – everyone is great. I love having the autonomy to get on with the things I feel are important. I feel valued and trusted and that’s really important to me.

I wasn’t happy in my job and one of my friends recommended Holiday Extras as a place to work. A job came up in the contact centre and I got it. Since then I’ve moved to the customer relations team, which is really suited to my skills as I like helping people and resolving issues.

2) What does a typical day look like for you?

We deal with post-booking queries, so everyday we look on the system and see what new queries have come in. We then distribute them out amongst the team and see what issues we can resolve straight away. If there is a lot of investigation to be done, we let the customers know that we are looking into it for them. We also help in the contact centre, helping the new starters deal with more-complex queries and trying to resolve them whilst the customer is on the phone. There is a lot of variety in my job as we have so many products and we’re always adding new ones.

3) What’s the coolest thing you have done/delivered/worked on/experienced at HX?

The charity calendar was really good fun to be involved in. I helped my colleague with pulling it all together and getting it set up. We raised over £1000 for Kent Air Ambulance and Macmillan Cancer Care and one of the pictures was even used as the Holiday Extras Christmas card. I also organised a cake bake for the MS charity, which was a brilliant day. We raised over £500 and Holiday Extras matched the amount.

4) What do you enjoy the most about working at HX?

Ooh let me think… I would say the atmosphere and the people. There is always such a positive vibe around the building as there is always something going on. The building is open plan so you can always hear lots of laughter from the teams around you. It doesn’t feel like an office.

2) What does a typical day look like for you?

It really depends on the business projects that are going on. Right now I spend a lot of time writing (my favourite thing) emails that need to go to customers to entice them to buy our products. It’s all about finding cool ways to get the message across to attract people to us. I’m trialling lots of different styles and copy techniques. I can get really creative, so it’s great fun. I also spend some time looking at mock ups and banners. With the banners for booking hotels with parking, I try to come up with images and copy that are relevant, but exciting and different to catch the attention of the customer. I love doing that.

2) What does a typical day look like for you?

I work on the growth reports, which are then sent on to the Holiday Extras directors. I then look at the statistic reports for my locations that I’m in charge of and see what’s working well/what needs to be changed. There is a lot of trialling in my team; we like to get things out there, see how they perform and if it does really well, roll it out to other locations.

I would say the growth reports, as there is a lot of responsibility and pressure on me as the data is used in the trading meetings and I need to explain why certain things are working and why other things aren’t. It’s quite scary, but I love it!

4) What do you enjoy the most about working at HX?

A few things: it’s an awesome place to work, my managers are really easy to talk to… I think more important for me, though, is the day-to-day challenge, as I constantly need to think and problem solve. I also really feel like I’m making a difference.

1) Why did you decide to join HX?

I had never heard of Holiday Extras before I joined and I was really after finding a job that was closer to home. When I came for the interview, the role sounded exactly like what I was looking for; plus, I instantly loved the building and thought this would be a cool place to work.

2) What does a typical day look like for you?

I’m very busy, which is just how I like it – keeps me on my toes! To start with, I come in and look at what morning jobs need to be done; this can include balancing credit cards and checking the bank accounts for money coming in. I have set tasks within my role, which is varied and involves me talking to different departments across the business. I’m also in charge of the insurance accounts, so I need to have in-depth knowledge of this area. I also help the team with any queries they may have and speak to our intermediaries regarding their payments.

3) What’s the coolest thing you have done/delivered/worked on/experienced at HX?

Implementing the new insurance system, Magenta and moving that forward to work in Dynamics. I’ve been heavily involved in this project and, although it’s been very challenging at times, it’s been worth it to get close to the finished product; besides, I love new challenges and take on everything that’s thrown at me. I am the main point of contact in the credit-control side for insurance, so I need to be aware and know exactly what I’m talking about for when the queries come in.

4) What do you enjoy the most about working at HX?

The job, the people and the building. The fun events that go on are great and definitely not like any other place I have worked at. It’s good to get involved in them and I’ve been involved in a few: cocktail making, School Sports Day and dressing in PJ’s for Children in Need to name a few! Holiday Extras also seem to care about what skills you have and how you can enhance them. I am currently studying for my NVQ in Management and my ICM Diploma, although I’m not looking forward to my first exam coming up!
